Council weighs up World Cup cost

16/Mar/2010

Comments:

WORLD Cup soccer matches look set to be shown on the Northbridge Piazza screen after all, but at what cost and to what extent will not be decided until the end of the month.

The City of Perth’s marketing, sponsorship and international relations committee will discuss tonight up to five options that would see matches shown. Options range in cost from $174,000 to $484,000, depending on the number of games to be shown.

Among the options on the table at tonight’s meeting will be the prospect of screening no pool matches, just Round 16 games onwards.

Another option would see the screening of Australian pool matches, plus all matches from June 26.

Council documents to be tabled at the meeting tonight say corporate sponsorship for the event is being sought to help with the costs.

It is estimated more than $20,000 would be required to cover the costs of staging pool matches every night.
