AS summer draws near, the Victoria Park Hotel restaurant would make a great setting for all those events that are just around the corner.

With a beautiful outdoor area for long summer evenings and a selection of lighter items on the menu, it is perfect for a meal or something to share with friends.

The menu has plenty of seafood dishes and has the odd Asian touch from fish laksa to the soonmi salad.

Sadly, it was a rainy Tuesday night when we went to test the new menu rather than the warm summer evening I had in mind, but the restaurant was welcoming with an open fire and friendly staff.

While the light side of the menu offered a tempting spicy peri peri squid, the lamb rack on the specials list was too hard to resist. The dish came recommended by the staff and it certainly lived up to expectation, with perfectly-cooked meat served with mashed potato, vegetables and a delicious mint-infused gravy.

My partner’s rump steak was generous, served with a side salad, “very tasty” beer battered chips and a sauce of your choice.

The restaurant seems a great option if you’re looking for good service, a comfortable atmosphere and good, hearty food.

One last thing – if you find yourself wondering about the giant bird cage in the centre of the restaurant, it is the entrance to the underground wine cellar, which I’m told holds the odd reserve bottle available by request.
