DINERS who enjoy fish on Good Friday need look no further than Govenders family-run restaurant, which has operated from Regents Park Road, Joondalup for 10 years.
The eatery is building on the success of Good Friday trading last year by opening on Friday, April 2, from 11am to 9pm. It will open as normal on Easter Saturday and Sunday, from 4.30pm.
Seafood lovers can enjoy battered, seasoned, grilled or marinated fish, homemade fish cakes, squid rings, garlic prawns and crabsticks, perfect with the British favourite, mushy peas.
Govenders was the first fish and chip outlet to offer marinated fish — masala, tandoori, mustard and Thai.
The big British clientele has appreciated the addition of Atlantic cod to the fresh fish range, which includes snapper, basa and hake.
Battered fish and chips are cooked in 100 per cent sunola oil, which is drained daily to ensure maximum freshness.
Non-seafood options include curries — steaming vats of tender lamb, chicken and vegetable dishes made with Govenders own spice mix, and a substantial meal served with rice and a paratha.
There are also steaks, schnitzel, hamburgers, foccacia and schwarma (a sandwich-like wrap) plus a range of fresh salads, including mixed bean, potato, pasta, and tuna, garden, rice and American slaw.
People come from north and south of the river to the Govender family’s only restaurant, which has an enviable reputation for cleanliness and fresh, tasty food on show.
Ordering at the counter, for dine-in or takeaway, is fast and efficient.
Valley Govender, whose name is synonymous with the family business, said the BYO restaurant catered for the whole family, with everything made fresh on the premises.
“The salads are made fresh daily, and the fish cakes and squid rings are homemade,” he said.
“Customers can browse at the display case and choose for themselves.”
Opening hours are Tuesday to Friday, 11am to 2pm, for lunch and Tuesday to Sunday, from 4.30pm, for dinner.
