MUGHLAI cooking is a tradition unique to India, and has evolved in to a fine and distinguished cuisine, according to the menu at South Perth’s D’Tandoor Indian Restaurant.

“The bounty of the farm, ocean and garden is transformed through hours of simmering in handis (metal or earthenware pots) to produce food that is beautifully tender and full of flavour.”

D’Tandoor is a restaurant treasure, situated in a secluded upstairs position on Mends Street.

Manager Steven and his friendly staff, along with the delicious smells of Indian food cooking in the semi-open kitchen, greet diners.

The decor is tasteful and vibrant, with Indian silks covering tables, and walls adorned with paintings, carvings and the smiling faces of Bollywood stars.

Dishes are halal, and your meal can start with entrees like chicken tikka, onion bhajis, samosas or sheeshkebabs.

Mains are served in traditional metal dishes – indulge in a melt-in-the-mouth lamb rogan josh, fiery prawn vindaloo, vegetarian curry or the chef’s recommendation of chicken marinated in spices and yoghurt and slowly cooked in the tandoor.

Condiments, rice dishes and tandoor-baked breads complement your meal.

If you have room, finish off with the popular gulab jamoons – deep fried milk dumplings, soaked in rose scented sugar syrup.

Banquets and catering are also available.

The many restaurant awards on display indicate the quality of food, while diners in traditional Indian dress point to the authenticity of dishes, and if any doubt remains, the flavours will surely delight.
